Earth Month 2024
In collaboration with the Office of Sustainability, Grad Gov, GREEN, and the Earth Week Collaborative, the Earth Commons is thrilled to present an array of green activities that will not only inspire us to care for the planet, but also build community. From film festivals to poster competitions and even a retreat, there’s something for everyone to engage with and enjoy.

Action
The goal of Earth Month events is to foster awareness, education, and action around sustainability and environmental stewardship within the Georgetown community. Our aim is to inspire individuals to become actively engaged in building a greener, more sustainable campus and planet.

- 3/18 – 4/19—Join the ‘Get Outside Challenge’ to boost your mental well-being by spending more time in nature, win prizes, and feel great! Brought to you by NatureRx from the the Earth Commons, campus mental health resources and student services.
- 3/20—Growing Roots: A Day of Introspection and Community Reflection – This day retreat is designed to create space for students, faculty, and staff to take a break, reflect, and build the community that cares for our common home. Calcagnini Contemplative Center. 9 am – 4 pm, Calcagnini Contemplative Center. RSVP required by 3/19.
- 3/25—Impossible Town: Reception, Film Screening and Panel Discussion*. In partnership with the DC Environmental Film Festival, the Earth Commons and Film and Media Studies will screen this story of personal ambitions in conflict with familial obligations in rural Appalachia. 5 pm, Lohrfink Auditorium. Free w/ RSVP.

- 4/8 – Protecting Paradise: Real-World Conservation Stories with Dr. Gina Green* a Live Podcast episode with Nicolás Ibargüen and Dr. Gina Green – 11:30-12:30pm, Copley Formal Lounge
- 4/8 – Ecology and Democracy: Growing Roots for Civic Engagement* Join the Center on Faith and Justice and the Earth Commons for a timely conversation on the intersection of ecology and democracy. 7-8:30pm, ICC Auditorium.
- 4/10 – DR Congo, (un)Just Tech and Human Rights: The Fictions of Environmental Sustainability* Join us for a dynamic panel discussion on the ethical implications of sustainable technology in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). 1pm, McShain Lounge

- 4/12—Green Hoya Poster Competition – Get creative! Craft a compelling poster that visually and concisely presents your work and impact. Applications close on April 3rd. Selected abstracts announced on April 5th.
- 4/13 & 4/20 – GREEN Woods Walk. 1-2pm, Georgetown Observatory. Let’s go for a walk with GREEN.
- 4/12-4/20—The Dept. of Performing Arts presents Hurricane Diane*. Part Greek comedy, part lesbian pulp fiction, part ecological thriller, Pulitzer Prize finalist Madeleine George hilariously eviscerates the cold shoulder we give to climate change in the name of “curb appeal”. This event is part of the Earth Commons’ collaborative Voices on the Environment series. 8 pm, Davis Performing Arts Center.
- 4/17-4/19 – Earth at the Crossroads II: A Cosmic Perspective on Environmental Crisis. Scholars, journalists, and artists from across North America will convene at Georgetown for a unique, three-day event that takes a cosmic perspective on today’s environmental crises. Earth at the Crossroads 2.0 will explore what the study of other worlds – and the study of our world as it was in the past – can reveal about Earth’s future habitability, and our prospects for survival in the coming centuries.
- 4/19—La Cosecha: Spring Festival – The Earth Commons invites you to come on to celebrate Earth Day at the Hoya Harvest Garden. Enjoy free food, arts and crafts, and plant your own seedling at our garden. 4-6pm, Regents 4th Fl. Patio.
- 4/20 – Celia Ledón Trashion Workshop. 4:30pm-6:00pm. Learn how to turn everyday items into fashionable pieces in this Trashion Workshop. RSVP here.
- 4/21 – GREEN Garden Open House. 1-5pm, Garden behind Leo O’Donovan Dining Hall. Take a walk around GREEN’s garden! This green space is cared for by Georgetown undergraduate students who work hard to plan, plant, and maintain this beautiful area!
- 4/21 – Trashion Show. 6-8pm, Copley Formal Lounge. Doors open at 6, show starts at 6:30!
- 4/22 – Olive Tree Installation – All Day, Sellinger Lounge Chalkboard.
- 4/22-4/24 – Peace on the Green, 9:00-9:30am, John Main Center. We will be offering a number of meditation and contemplation sessions.

- 4/28 – Earth Week Benefit Concert. 6:30-9:30pm, Copley Lawn. Our lineup includes: Brent & Co, Home Remedies, Blunda, Leisure Rules, and Jeff Draco. We’ll also be selling merch during the concert. Additionally, food options will be provided by local eateries and food trucks. All proceeds from this event will be donated to the Potomac Riverkeeper Network.
