Environmental Science Policy Fellowship
The Earth Commons and the Capitol Applied Learning Labs (CALL) are offering an Environmental Science Policy (ESP) Fellowship and Capitol Campus residency for STEM majors for Fall 2025.
This competitive fellowship will offer up to 20 STEM majors the unique opportunity to integrate their scientific expertise with real-world policy at Georgetown’s growing Capitol Campus. Designed for Third and Fourth year students in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology, Math and Computer Science, this program will enable students to explore pressing environmental science and policy challenges through experiential learning on Georgetown’s new Capitol Campus.

Key Program Highlights:
1. Courses
The curriculum includes a professional experience (plus seminar), professional/personal development workshops, and a curated selection of general education and elective courses.
- Shaping National Environmental Science Policy (4 credits): A cornerstone course that will introduce science policy, advocacy, and practical politics through diverse readings and hands-on projects.
- Professional Development (seminar and internship with DC-based environmental organization; 4 credits): The Fellowship requires students to participate in an internship. Students have the option of securing their own internship, or applying for one of the internships that have been arranged for students participating in the program. Internships may include congressional offices, federal agencies, think tanks, NGOs, and corporate leaders in environment and sustainability. Past placements for similar Georgetown internships include USAID, the FDA, NRDC, and the National Academies Board on Global Health.
- Current Events in Environmental Science Policy (1 credit): An interdisciplinary learning experience led by experts in biology, chemistry, and physics.
Elective Options
- Customizable coursework will align with students’ career goals. Courses will be built to minimize pre-requisites. Options may include, for example:
- Environmental Communication (3 credits): Focus on developing skills to translate complex scientific ideas for diverse audiences effectively.
- Business & Climate Change (1 credit): Focus on the intersection of climate, finance and sustainability.
- Global Health and Climate Change (3 credits): Focus on the effects of climate on health outcomes.

2. Capitol Campus Residency
Students will have a semester-long residency at Georgetown’s state-of-the-art residential building at 55 H Street N.W., conveniently located near the U.S. Capitol, Union Station, and vibrant downtown D.C. neighborhoods. Students will benefit from proximity to internships, government, and non-governmental organizations, as well as cultural institutions, music venues, grocery stores, and restaurants.

ESP Fellowship students will receive the benefits of the CALL Scholar Equity Package, which includes:
- Fully-funded Metrocard
- $100 in Cultural Funds
- $125 in Professional Development Funds
- $150 Professional Attire Funds (application based)
- 2 community lunches a week
- Community building & networking programs/events
- Moving and storage of items over winter break (to/from Hilltop/CC)
4. Career Outcomes and Networking
This Fellowship will provide a competitive edge to alumni as they transition to impactful, full-time roles in government, industry, and academia. Examples may include full-time positions with USAID, NRDC, and think tanks. In addition to internships, the program will foster professional growth through networking events with experts, alumni, and leaders across sectors.
