In collaboration with the Office of Sustainability, Grad Gov, GREEN, the Earth Commons is proud to present an array of activities that will not only inspire us to care for the planet, but also build community. From film festivals to poster competitions and even a retreat, there’s something for everyone to engage with and enjoy.

- 3/24—UNEARTH Film Screening & Panel Discussion. Join the Earth Commons and DCEFF, the Environmental Film Festival of the Nation’s Capital, for a screening of UNEARTH—a powerful film following Native Alaskan activists and salmon fishermen as they fight to protect Bristol Bay from North America’s largest proposed copper mine. - 4/2—Distinguished Lecture and Panel Discussion with “Father of the Internet” Vint Cerf Lohrfink Auditorium. 4:00-6:00PM. Distinguished Lecture by Vint Cerf followed by panel discussion with the directors of the centers comprising the Emergent Ethics Network (Kennedy Institute of Ethics, Pellegrino Center for Clinical Bioethics, Environmental Justice Commons, and the Center for Digital Ethics). - 4/3 – Thriving At Georgetown: Sustainability 101. Location; Arrupe Hall Multipurpose Room. Faculty and staff are invited for this in-person training, to learn more about how to be a sustainable leader on and off campus, Georgetown’s commitments to sustainability, and how to be a good steward of the environment. We invite you all to join us for food, learning, and prizes! RSVP today!
- 4/4 Green Karaoke. 5-7pm. Location ICC 115. Do you love to sing? Do you make up your own lyrics to songs? Come join the GradGov EES Committee for a night of fun and song. Sing your favorite song or parody another song with lyrics about the environment. Duos and teams of 3 allowed. The best song parody wins a prize! Food and drinks will be provided. RSVP now!
- 4/7—Georgetown Dialogues Initiative: Powering the Future Contending Visions for the Clean Energy Economy. Lohrfink Auditorium. 4:00-6:00PM. Join us for the upcoming Georgetown Dialogues, featuring a dynamic discussion on “Powering the Future: Competing Visions for the Clean Energy Economy.” Moderated by Professor Joanna Lewis, the event will feature prominent speakers Jigar Shah and Emily Domenech, who will offer their insights on the critical challenges of our evolving energy landscape. - 4/10 – Environmental Justice Through Law. 5:30-6:30pm. Georgetown REUSE, in partnership with Rachel’s Network, Earth Commons, and the Office of Sustainability, is hosting an engaging and informative panel discussion on Environmental Justice through Law. Join us on April 10th at 5:30pm to explore how advocacy, policy, grassroots organizing, and law can drive environmental justice. Register here.
- 4/11 – 4/12. Camping and hiking! Overnight in Shenandoah National Park. OE will leave campus late Friday afternoon and head towards Shenandoah NP. Friday evening will be spent cooking food, relaxing around the campfire, and hopefully a little star gazing. We will hike on Saturday before returning to campus late afternoon. Sign up.
- 4/11 – Georgetown Spring Clean. Location: Harbin Patio 10 am to 2 pm. Get a head start on your move out and spring cleaning by donating items to the Spring Clean Out. All donations are sent to local nonprofit organizations in the DMV, including Georgetown’s very own REUSE. Learn about what donations are accepted here.
- 4/11- Movie Night. 7-9pm. Location: Capitol Campus. Come join Grad Gov’s EES Committee to watch the powerful movie An Inconvenient Truth. The movie will be shown at the Capitol Campus. Food and drinks will be provided. RSVP here.
- 4/17-4/20. Backpacking trip over Easter Break at the Triple Crown Loop in Virginia. This trip is also running at waitlist only as of now. Details: Join Outdoor Ed for a 3-night, 4-day backpacking trip of Virginia’s Triple Crown Loop over Easter Break. We will leave early on Thursday, April 17th, and arrive back in the evening on Sunday, April 20th. The mileage will vary between 8-14 miles per day and 32 miles total. No backpacking experience is required but you must be in physical shape to hike this far with a pack. This is a challenging hike. All backpacking gear and food will be provided. Signup here.
- 4/22 – Earth Day Festival! Location: Leavey Esplanade 1-3 pm. The Earth Commons invites you to come to celebrate Earth Day at the Hoya Harvest Garden. Enjoy food and drinks, music, art, crafts, campus groups and education opportunities, and plant your seedlings in our Hoya Harvest Garden! Save the date!
- 4/22 – Global Voices Towards a Sustainable Future. 2:30pm-3:30pm. The focus of our discussion will be to explore climate change through a broader lens—one that centers diverse perspectives, particularly those of experts from or with experience in the Global South and Indigenous communities. Our goal is to move beyond dominant narratives and gain deeper insight into how different regions and groups experience and respond to climate crises.
- 4/22 – Mending Session with Restitch. Maker Hub Lau 1. Celebrate Earth Week with ReStitch by learning basic sewing skills in a hands-on, beginner-friendly workshop. This session is all about sustainability and creativity through sewing.You’ll get to practice your stitching by either mending a clothing item you bring from home or by creating an upcycled fabric keychain using materials we provide. - 4/23 – REUSE: EARTH WEEK THEME GU Farmer’s Market Sale. 11am – 4pm. Find us in Red Square to shop our selection of affordably priced second hand clothing and drop off any items in need of mending by ReStitch!
- 4/23 – Dear Body of Water Opening Reception. 4-5:15pm. Location: Launder Library. The Dear Body of Water exhibitions on the 5th and 4th floors of Lauinger Library incorporate materials from the Booth Family Center for Special Collections and artwork by Georgetown students. The works collectively address bodies of water as living beings to highlight the love and respect we have for our waterways, and to cultivate care for watersheds.The opening reception will include poetry readings by Georgetown students and a presentation from writer and Dear Body of Water founder, Gretchen Henderson.
- 4/24 – Empowered to Make a Difference: Lessons in Advocacy from Erin Brockovich. 11-12:15pm at Gaston Hall. Join Lecture Fund for its annual Jurist Lecture, featuring renowned environmental activist Erin Brockovich and Professor Randall Amster, Co-Director of the Joint Environment & Sustainability Program in The Earth Commons & College of Arts & Sciences, on the power of individual advocacy and grassroots action.

- 4/26 – Earth Week Hike. 9:30am- 4:30pm. Meet outside of Leo’s. We are stoked for this 6 mile hike in Cunningham Falls State Park/Catoctin Mtn Park. Our goal is to visit both Wolf and Chimney Rock. RSVP here.

The goal of Earth Month events is to foster awareness, education, and action around sustainability and environmental stewardship within the Georgetown community. Our aim is to inspire individuals to become actively engaged in building a greener, more sustainable campus and planet.
