Panayiotis Pafilis is a Professor of Animal Diversity at the Department of Biology, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA). He worked as a Lecturer at the Department of Environment at the University of the Aegean and as a Research Fellow at the School of Environment and Sustainability at the University of Michigan, USA. His research focuses on understanding animal diversity drivers, biodiversity conservation and adaptations in Mediterranean ecosystems with a particular emphasis on small islet populations. He has co-authored 155 scientific papers, 245 conference papers and 22 books. He has supervised 68 undergraduate theses, 22 postgraduate theses and 9 PhD theses. Panayiotis is the Director of the Zoology & Marine Biology Section at NKUA as well as the Deputy Director of the Zoology Museum at the university. He serves as the President of the National NATURA 2000 Committee and the President of the Greek National Committee on the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. He is also the President of the Hellenic Society for Biological Sciences, President of the Hellenic Herpetological Society and Vice-President of the Hellenic Evolutionary Society whilst serving as a Μember of the Board of Directors of the Natural Environment and Climate Change Agency and the Scientific Committee of the National Museum of Natural History.
