Event Recap: DCEFF 2026 Preview Event
On Wednesday, February 11, the Earth Commons hosted a special screening event at Georgetown University’s Capitol Campus in partnership with the DC Environmental Film Festival. The event was co-presented with Earth Commons – Georgetown’s Institute for Environment & Sustainability and brought together students, faculty, filmmakers, and community members for an evening centered on ocean conservation and environmental storytelling.
The program began with a free public reception, creating space for attendees to connect before the screening.
The featured film, Her Shark Story, tells the story of Sofia, a young marine biologist in the Galápagos who reconnects with her absent father through their shared passion for protecting the largest shark in the world, the whale shark. Through intimate storytelling and striking cinematography, the film highlights both the emotional dimensions of family and the urgent ecological challenges facing marine species.
Following the screening, guests participated in a Q&A with Director, Producer, and Cinematographer Ignacio Walker and Jonathan Green, Founder and Director of the Galapagos Whale Shark Project. The discussion explored the making of the film, the science behind whale shark conservation, and the importance of amplifying local voices in global environmental efforts.
