Event Recap: Climate Change and the Security Implications for Greece and its Neighbors

Last week, the Earth Commons Greece and the Columbia Athens Global Centre co-hosted a panel discussion titled “Rising Temperatures, Rising Tensions: Climate Change and Security Implications for Greece and its Neighbors” at the University of Athens’ Argyriadis Auditorium. Over 100 Georgetown and Columbia alumni and friends joined us to explore a critical question: Is the link between rising temperatures and rising tensions a one-way path that threatens peace, human security, and resource access? Or, can it drive cooperation on adaptation strategies and foster a broader regional stability?

Our great panelists provided deep insights into these challenges:

Dr. Emmanuella Doussis examined the evolution of Greece’s climate policies and the vital role of multilateral diplomacy in building resilience to climate-induced geopolitical shifts.

Dr. Eleni Myrivili showcased successful examples of urban transformations and community-led initiatives that adapt cities to extreme heat.

Peter Schwartzstein reflected on how climate change can exacerbate conflict and security risks, while also highlighting hopeful stories of refugee integration.

Nikos Tsafos discussed the implications for energy security, underlining Greece’s progress in the green transition and its potential to lead the region toward climate neutrality.

The discussion was moderated by Ioli Christopoulou, who guided us through these complex topics and encouraged the sharing of best practices for strengthening climate resilience.
