Dionysios Raitsos is an Associate Professor of Biological Oceanography at the Department of Biology, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, a position he has held since 2019. Professor Raitsos will be on sabbatical at Georgetown University’s Earth Commons Institute in 2025. He holds a degree in Marine Biology, a Master’s in Marine and Fisheries Science, and a PhD in Satellite Oceanography from Newcastle, Aberdeen, and Plymouth Universities in the UK, respectively. He spent six years as a postdoctoral researcher in Greece (HCMR) and Saudi Arabia (KAUST), and from 2013 to 2019 served as a Senior Research Scientist at Plymouth Marine Laboratory (UK). With over 22 years of research experience, Dio applies a multidisciplinary approach that combines satellite and in situ measurements to study the impacts of environmental variability and climate change on marine biodiversity, focusing on ocean color, plankton dynamics, coral reefs, and fisheries. He is particularly interested in large-scale, long-term interactions between the atmosphere, land, and ocean, and how these influence marine ecosystems from primary producers to higher trophic levels. At present, he leads the Oceanography Earth Observation (OEO) group, a team of 35 members, including 13 undergraduate students, 8 Master’s students, 12 PhD candidates, and 2 postdoctoral researchers.
